The LB1978 is a versatile SMPS controller that offers adjustable frequency, duty cycle, and dead time, as well as flexible synchronous and asynchronous operation. It can be used in various SMPS topologies and multiple units can be connected in a master-slave configuration to achieve phase shifting, reducing ripple and minimizing the size of inductors and capacitors. Internally, the LB1978 features mode control, which allows it to switch between charge and discharge modes based on the MODE pin. When the MODE pin is high, the controller is set to charge mode, and when it is low, it is set to discharge mode. The MODE pin is also locked through the EN pin to prevent erroneous switching due to interference. The LB1978 provides an external COMP pin that accepts input voltages between 0.7V and 4.5V, allowing for adjustable PWM duty cycle control. The external COMP pin can be used with external circuits to build voltage-mode or current-mode SMPS. Additionally, the internal DT pin can be configured to set the dead time, making it suitable for various gate drivers and MOSFETs.
